for many of those goods. the ports of los angeles and long beach, california. they are critical, because those ports handle about 39% of all the goods that arrive by ship. it came to about $200 billion worth this year. what's behind this strike? here's john blackstone in l.a. >> reporter: it began with 70 workers. now all 800 members of their union are on strike. but 10,000 other dock workers are refusing to cross the picket line. that has brought the normally busy port to a new stand still. geraldine knatz directs the port of los angeles. >> there's probably about a billion dollars worth of goods that come through this port everyday and we probably got about 900,000 or so people in the southland whose jobs are tied to the activity going through this port. >> reporter: the ports are clogged with 16 ships waiting to be unloaded. another six are anchored off the coast. >> if the ships are not working, the truckers are not working, the warehouse people are not working. it will ripple through the supply chain. >> reporter: it doesn't take much of a delay to cause problems for people. >> no.

, the supreme court has notify the us it will take us gay marriage cases including california's ban on same-sex marriage unions. we got the word and our correspondent is with us on the phone now. shannon, what is the story? >>shannon: they decided to take up to different gay marriage cases. you mention the one from california, you may remember proposition eight. the voters passed a measure that allows only the recognition of one man, one woman as a "marriage." a federal court overturned that. that want on appeal to the supreme court and they decided they will weigh in on that fight. in addition there were eight cases on the diagnosis -- the docket on the defense of marriage act and a portion only recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman and has been challenged dozens of times. they agreed to take up a case dealing with defense of marriage act. two different cases but both going to the same issues. they are different on technical and legal points but the bottom line is the same and the court has told us it will hear two gay marriage cases and we expect the earliest to get on the cale

california. and we are looking at moderate rain at this time across northern california into southwestern oregon and also up in the seattle and the coast of washington state. now tomorrow we are actually going to see even heavier rain start to move in. we have already had reports of about 8 to 10 inches of rainfall already from the past few storms we've already seen. but we've also gotten reports of wind gusts up to 60 to more than 80-mile-per-hour. and we're going to see more of the same if not a little more intense as we go into sunday morning. additional rainfall totals on top of the 8 to 10 inches on the ground could be an additional 5 to 6, 7 inches of rainfall out of what we'll see tomorrow morning. we have the series of storms moving into the west coast. then it's a totally different story right in the middle of the country. we're also talking about record-break heat today. down into dallas and also into san antonio where temperatures should get into the upper 70s and lower 80s. that's about 20 degrees warmer than average for this first day of december. the only cool spot really is

to pull us together toward a shared goal of peace and prosperity. growing up in california i didn't know much about the arab world. then after graduating from the university of california at berkeley, i traveled to north africa as peace corps engineer. i worked as an english teacher in morocco two years and quickly grew to love this part of the world. since joining the service i spent almost my entire career in middle east and africa. one of the things that impressed me were people old enough to have lived and traveled in the united states when we had closer relations. those days are back. we had 1,700 libyans apply for fullbright grants to study in the united states this year, more than any other country in the world. we know that libya is still recovering from an intense period of conflict. there are many courageous libyans who bear the scars of that battle. we are happy we have been able to treat some of your war wounded at u.s. hospitals. we look forward to building partnerships between american and libyan hospitals to help return libya's healthcare system to the extraordinary standa

. they would hear the prop 8 case out of california. prop 8 is the california ballot proposition which amended the california constitution to define marriage between a man and a woman. the court will some time this year, probably in june, decide whether that amendment is unconstitutional. but the court also said it would hear a challenge to the defense of marriage act, a 1996 law passed under president clinton that defined marriage between a man and a woman for the purposes of federal law. the question is why now? why did the supreme court choose this moment? nine states and washington, d.c. all recognize same-sex marriage now. that doesn't seem like very many but it's happening quickly. three of those states people voted to legal marriage in november. maryland, maine, washington. first time ever done so. there's a big public opinion trend here. since '04, "the washington post" abc news polls have been asking people should it be legal or illegal for gay and lesbian couples to get married? in 2004, 59% of people said they thought it should be against the law. in 2012 it was almost the opposite.
